In the past, arcades were extremely popular. Everyone went to them to play all kinds of awesome games and to spend their hard-earned quarters to see if they could beat that high score. Space Invaders was so popular in Japan that there was literally a shortage of coins because people kept dumping them into the machines. Arcades used to have their own sort of rules as well, concerning the way you played the game and didn’t do anything really cheap. People used to get beat up and stuff too. Good times.

Dude on the left picked Akuma too many times.
However, nowadays in North America, the arcade scene is practically dead. No one goes to arcades anymore, even though there’s the same amount of awesome games and whatnot. Tons of successful franchises started out in arcades. Time Crisis, House of the Dead, Street Fighter, King of Fighters, and Tekken all started out as dusty cabinets with quarter slots. Guitar Hero and Rock Band are considered to be revolutionary games, but Guitar Freak and Drummania have been around for years before those came out. DDR got its start in the arcades too. Basically, the arcade scene is dead. And anyone who ever goes to arcades is either Taiwanese, or hogs the Tekken 6 and Street Fighter 4 machines. Or both.

Why do you think arcades are so dead nowadays, even though amazing games are coming out for them all the time? Is it because of the creation of the home video game console? What about financial reasons?

Yeah, I think arcades are pretty much dead because people can buy an Xbox and game on the couch at home.
I think Arcades are dead because most people are to lazy to go somewhere to play on them. Most people have Wii’s or Xbox’s and etc these days.
